Catalog & Exhibition Theme:  Anxiety

You can’t tune out talk of crisis, meltdown, bail out. Anxiety marks the current zeitgeist as we collectively hold our breath.  What does it look like to confront this anxiety or escape from it all together? 

Cantanker magazine is seeking submissions of artwork that relate to personal, social, political, or economic anxiety.  Art may address alienation, disaster, chaos, abandon, distraction or frivolity.  Formal elements like materials, color, and composition may also express tension.  New work that addresses the theme of anxiety in thoughtful and playful ways is preferred.

Selected work will be featured in Cantanker’s full-color summer art catalog, Issue 8: Anxiety and in a group exhibition at Pump Project Art Complex opening August 29, 2009.

Submission Deadline:  June 8, 2009

About the Juror:
Andrea Mellard helps coordinate innovative exhibitions and programs as the Curatorial Associate and Manager of Public Programs at the Austin Museum of Art. She came to Austin seven years ago to earn a M.A. in American Studies from the University of Texas. Before moving to Austin, she worked as a curatorial and research assistant at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of American History.  Drawing on an interdisciplinary background she seeks to make connections between visual art and other cultural expressions, inspiration and everyday experience.

Submission Guidelines:
•    Submitted work must either formally or conceptually address the theme ANXIETY.
•    Works can be executed in any media, traditional or digital/new media. 
•    All works must be submitted digitally in high-resolution jpg files (300 dpi or larger).
•    Video work must be submitted as still images.
•    Work submitted may be in any size and will be appropriately scaled to fit the catalog.
•    Only recent or newly created work will be considered.
•    Submissions must be made online at www.cantanker.com. Please note that submissions cannot be mailed.
•    Work submitted must be available for the group show August 30 – September 19, 2009.
•    All artists are welcome to submit except those who are members of the Cantanker staff.

Entry Requirements:
•    $10 for a single submission, $20 for 3 submissions.
•    There is no upper limit on submissions.
•    Artists should provide a brief statement about their work. (150 words or less).

Jury Process & Dates
•    Submissions will be juried by Andrea Mellard.
•    Artists will be notified of their acceptance by August 3.
•    Accepted submissions will be printed in full color in Issue 8 of Cantanker with full credit given to the artist.
•    Selected artists will be contacted by the Cantanker editorial staff with details regarding Issue 8: Anxiety group show set to open August 29, 2009.
•    Selected artists are responsible for shipping expenses to the gallery. Cantanker will provide return shipping at Cantanker’s expense.
